Stars & Stripes
Designed and quilted by Pat Brown for Benartex
This project was made using fat quarters from the Benartex Stars & Stripes collection. Use 1/4" seam allowances unless otherwise indicated.
Appliquéd Blocks (finished block size = 9"): There are four appliquéd blocks. The sample was made using hand appliqué technique. Change the instructions accordingly if you choose to use fusible web or machine appliqué. Make templates for all appliqué pattern pieces. When cutting the template pieces, cut 3/16" away from the traced line.

- With right sides together, sew the top and bottom of heart fabrics together along the long side. Press seam toward the dark side. Using heart template (A) as a guide, position the template onto the joined fabrics and trace on the right side with chalk marker, and cut out. Center heart onto background fabric. Appliqué in place.
- Block Borders: Sew a sashing strip to each side of the block. Press seams outward. Sew a corner square to each side of the remaining two sashing strips. Press seams toward center. Attach one unit to the top and the remaining unit to the bottom of the block. Press seams outward. The block should measure 9-1/2" square.

- With right sides together, sew the strips together to form a unit 2" X 22". Sewing order should be Dark blue/Peaceful pale/Victory red. Press seam allowances to one side.
- Position Templates I, J, K and L onto strip unit and trace. Cut 1/4" away from the marked line. Be careful when tracing templates so colors are correctly positioned. For placement guide, lightly trace the design onto the background fabric. Appliqué in the following order: I, J, K and L.
- Block Border: Repeat step #2 from Heart Block instructions to attach borders.

- For a placement guide, lightly trace the design onto the background fabric. Appliqué in the following order:
- G & H
- D, E, & F
- Large stars, red star in center and blue stars to either side.
- Using an outline stitch, embroider the words "United We Stand" by hand with 2 strands of embroidery floss. Alternatively, an embroidery machine may be used.
- Block Border: Repeat step #2 from Heart Block instructions to attach borders.
