Heirloom Garden Quilt
(Fat quarter quilt using Yours Truly fabric collection by Benartex)
Designed by Pat Brown
Finished Size: 44" X 52"

This project is comprised of four different blocks with some embroidered pieces. Some of the blocks are rotated so it gives a more "random" look. All fabrics used are fat quarters from the Yours Truly collection. However, you will need one yard of a neutral background fabric for the embroidery and some DMC floss. The sample quilt varies slightly from the written instructions due to fabric availability. Feel free to use your own color combinations from this wonderful new collection by Benartex.

Embroidery:
Cut the following pieces from a neutral background fabric for the embroidered pieces. (The Antique Floral #3101/91 from the Benartex Bare Necessities collection was used in the sample.)

Block 1: Cut 4   4-1/2" X 8-1/2" rectangle
Block 2: Cut 2   6-1/2" square
Block 3: Cut 6   4-1/2" X 6-1/2" rectangle
Block 4: Cut 4   4-1/2" X 6-1/2" rectangle

See Designs 1-4 for embroidery. Trace the embroidered design onto the right side of the background fabric with a blue washout marker, being careful that the design is centered on the fabric. Using a backstitch or outline stitch and two strands of DMC floss for the embroidery, stitch the designs by hand. To give more stability to the stitched block, you can place a thin piece of batting behind the background fabric and stitch through both layers. The DMC colors used in the sample: 221, 760 and 761 for the flowers, 520 and 522 for the leaves and 738 for the French knots in the flower centers. Details in the petals and veins of the leaves can be marked with a fine-tip pigma pen suitable for fabric. After embroidery is complete, you may begin to cut and sew the remaining pieces for Blocks 1-4.

Cut and piece together the following blocks using 1/4" seam allowances. Note that several blocks use a large square or rectangles that are cut from the same fabric fat quarter. Cut these squares first, otherwise there will not be a large enough piece from which to cut the remaining units. Seam allowances are included in the cutting instructions.
