Pat Campbell
Patricia B. Campbell of Dallas, Texas is a quilt artist, teacher, lecturer and author known for her unique style of Jacobean Appliqu using glorious colors, and for her excellence in appliqu techniques.
Pat began quilt making in 1983. She did not learn from her Mother or Grandmother. "Neither was a needlewoman," Pat explains, "but my Mother did give me her silver thimble when I was 15. I think she knew that someday I'd put it to good use."
Realizing very quickly that appliqu was her passion, and wanting to do something new and different, she adapted 17th century (Jacobean era) crewel embroidery designs to hand appliqu. She explains creating her style, "I knew it had to be floral, it had to be fantasy rather than realism, and it had to be appliqu." She then developed several methods of appliquing the graceful but tricky shapes typical of fantasy botanicals.
Pat achieved instant fame when her stunning Jacobean-style quilt "Jacobean Arbor" appeared on the cover of AQS American Quilter magazine in 1990. She declares, I love the fantasy botanicals, the swirls, and the curves. Flowers, leaves, trees-I can recreate these lovely things in fabric!" Pat also loves color-choosing fabrics and putting them together. "You're a maverick," exclaimed her favorite quilt shop owner. "It's true," Pat replied, "Magenta is my neutral!" Vibrant, bold, brilliant color brings her quilts to "life."
Her quilts have won many national prizes: "Jacobean Arbor" has won eight ribbons, including a blue ribbon at the AQS show in 1990, and a Best of Show in Lancaster, Pa. "Elizabethan Woods" is a five-time winner, including another blue ribbon at the AQS show in 1991; and "Vitis Vinifera" has won three ribbons and a Best of Show in Louisville, KY.
Thirteen quilting magazines have featured Pat's quilts including American Quilter, McCall's Quilting, and Traditional Quiltworks. A popular teacher, Pat has taught throughout the U.S. as well as in England South Africa and Australia. A Michigan "transplant" via Florida, Pat has a reputation for arriving in Western attire. "I love the Texas look and it's a great place to live, to boot! Texas is an attitude, not just a place," she says. Pat's books include "Jacobean Rhapsodies" (C&T) and her newly released "Best of Jacobean Appliqu, " (AQS press). Her website is www.patcambell.com
