Kimiko Ikeda

Chances are, you've seen Kimiko Ikeda's designs in the home furnishings, stationary or china section of the department store. This talented artist's work has been translated into all sorts of products, and we were delighted to translate it into quilting fabrics.

Design comes naturally to Kimiko. Growing up in Tokyo, her mother was a sculptor and her brother painted. Her grandparents came to New York to visit in 1910 and later told the little girl bedtime stories about the large avenues, the Easter Parade, and Niagara Falls. So when Kimiko had an opportunity to come to New York, she left immediately.

Kimiko's free and colorful palette has been compared to Matisse and Dufy, but she cites Georgia O'Keefe as one artist who influenced her. Her designs are exuberant, large and whimsical. In creating "Kimiko's Kids," she combined tropical flowers, checks and stripes with baby animals. The result is charming! Although she is a sewer, Kimiko had never done quilting before, and yet she presented us with a lovely 3-D crib quilt made from her new fabric. "I learned so much from my qulting experience, " says Kimiko. "I can't wait to begin the next collection."
