I began quilting in the early 1970s when I was asked to teach needlework
and quilting for a county recreational program. National exposure followed in 1978 when I served as a consultant to the West Virginia Department of Culture and History, organizing a quilt show in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service's issuance of a commemorative stamp, recognizing quilting as a folk art. I served on the planning committee for the First Continental
Quilting Congress held in Arlington, Virginia in 1978. These two events
resulted in invitations to lecture and teach at quilting events across the
United States and in Canada.
I lecture and conduct workshops in many techniques of quilting with emphasis
on those subjects related to the development and use of quilting designs.
This is an outgrowth of my work with The Stencil Company, for which I design quilting stencils.
I have served as a quilt consultant and designer to Spartex, Inc. developing designs for pre-printed wholecloth quilts. In 1992, the company introduced five designs based on quilts in the collection of the National Museum of
American History, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C. I researched
wholecloth quilts in the Smithsonian's collection and selected those which
have artistic and commercial appeal to quilters. It was necessary to work
from photographs and slides since the quilts were unavailable for study.
Queen size quilts, wall hangings, pillows and a crib quilt were the first
products to be available in the fall of 1993. A second series of designs
were introduced in the fall of 1994. I most recently designed a series of
wholecloth quilt tops which are now being printed and distributed by
Benartex, Inc.
I have been a contributing writer for "Quilt Craft" and "Lady's Circle
Patchwork Quilt" magazines and designed a series of fast and easy crib
quilts for which instructions were published in "Quilt Craft". I also
write other articles of general interest to quilters. I have filmed five TV
shows with Kay Wood. They are seen on her PBS quilting series, "Strip
Quilting With Kaye" and "Quilting for the 90's". I also appeared on 13
segments of another TV series, "Heirlooms by Design," which was shown in the
Alabama area through the CBS cable network.
I am a retired co-curator of "The Hoffman Challenge" with Betty Boyink. The
Challenge is a national contest of quilted wallhangings, clothing and dolls.
I serve as a quilt consultant to Benartex, Inc. I have also served as quilting consultant to Talon, Inc (thread) and Stencil House (quilting designs).
I have designed two garments for Invitational Exhibits. They were
"Statements" sponsored by P and B Fabrics and The Fairfield Fashion Show
and have designed for the "Silver Dollar City" quilt challenge.
Publications: "WMU Centennial Quilt Pattern Book" published by the Women's
Missionary Union Southern Baptist Convention. I have also contributed
chapters to two quilting books published by Rodale Publications.
I am a quilt judge and teacher certified by the National Quilting
Association.
